Although the country is not particularly large by South American standards, there is great variety in the climate, largely determined by altitude. The Pacific coastal area has a wet tropical climate as does the Amazon on the other side of the country. The Andean highlands is temperate and generally dry and higher altitudes in the Andes is considered alpine.
Ecuador experiences little variation in daylight hours due to being situated on the equator.
