Colombia has the biggest variety of flower species of any country in the world with about one-fifth of the worlds species existing in Colombia. Not surprisingly, the country is also one of the world's leading countries for exporting flowers. The flower industry also provides an important boost for rural areas of Colombia which traditionally loses population to the cities.
The national flower of Colombia is the orchid Cattleya trianae which was selected as the national symbol by the Colombian naturalist José Jerónimo Triana who described it as one of the most beautiful flowers in the world.
