Colombia is the only country in South America to have coastlines in both the Pacific and Caribbean. In addition to these coastlines, Colombia also has a number of islands and atolls in the Caribbean Sea called the Archipelago of San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina, or colloquially San Andres y Providencia which is located 480 miles (720 km) northwest from the Colombian Caribbean Coast.

These islands are also a department of Colombia and consist of two island groups about 775 km (480 miles) northwest of Colombia and 220 km (140 miles) from the coast of Nicaragua. There are eight outlying banks and reefs and the capital is San Andrés.

The archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia y Santa Catalina is identified by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve, It is made up of the islands of San Andres, Providence and St. Catherine, Bolivar and Albuqueque islets, Cotton, Haynes, Johnny, Serrana, Serranilla, Quitasueno, Rocky, and Crab cays, and Alicia and Bajo Nuevo sand banks.
