The town is located in the south west of the Cundinamarca department, in the warm zone of the Tequendama province. To the north is located the town of La Mesa to the south the towns of Apulo and Viota, to the east the town El Colegio and to the west the towns of Jerusalem and Quipile.
The first inhabitants of the region were the anapoymas indians from the Panche nation. Between Tocaima and [Tena] existed only small indigenous houses. The foundation of the town was declared in August 10th, 1627, by the Spanish counselor Don Lesmes de Espinosa Saravia. After the Spanish colonization it became the resting place for travelers who's destination was the south of Colombia.
Anapoima has a pleasanf climate. The average temperature is around the year is 26 °C (79 °F).
