Huila is located in the southwest of the country. Colombia's largest river, the Magdalena, has its source in the Huila department.
Neiva is the capital of Huila. It is located in the Valley of the Magdalena River in south central Colombia. Due to its location near the equator and its low altitude, the city has a hot and humid climate with daytime temperatures ranging from 32 to 39 degrees celcius, (89 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit).
The city was founded by Diego de Ospina y Medinilla. It is about a five-hours drive from the Colombian capital, Bogotá. Main universities include Universidad Surcolombiana, Antonio Nariño University, and Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia.
The city contains many monuments, especially around the edges of the Magdalena River. There are also some popular parks and gardens. The main airport is Benito Salas Vargas Airport.
