Guainía for "Land of many waters") lies in the east of the country, bordering Venezuela and Brazil. Its capital is Inirida. The population in this department is concentrated around the Guaviare River. Many people originally came from the Colombian Andean zone and Boyacá. Other inhabitants include llaneros, people from the eastern plains. The native population is composed of native amerindians of which the biggest group is the Puinave and the Curripaco. There are is a total of 24 ethnic groups in the department, most speak four native languages and dialects, as well as Spanish and Portuguese.
GuainĂa is located in the Red Zone of Colombia (Zonas Roho) which means that it is dangerous to venture there. The department has a strong presense of guerrilla's and associated coca plantations. Besides these dangers, the landscape is beautiful and the native indians are hospitable. Unfrotunately, drug trafficking and war has displacing much of the original population who seek a safer environment in Colombia's cities.
Native Amerindians have won important places of power including the Inírida mayor and governor. There's only one municipality in Guainía: Inírida, the capital.
