Colombia is a unitary republic consisting of thirty-two departments and a Capital District. Each department has a Governor and a Department Assembly. Departments are sub-divisions similar to US states or Canadian provinces and are granted a certain degree of autonomy.
Departments are formed by a grouping of municipalities. The Capital District is the country's capital city, Bogotá and is partially dependent on the Department of Cundinamarca that surrounds it.
